Carnival of the Animals: Ch.1- The Barren Land
CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS
COMPOSER:
SCENOGRAPHER:
CAMILLE SAINT SAENS
Shalaka Joshi
DESIGNED FOR WEBBER DOUGLAS STUDIO, rCSSD, LONDON
The dramaturgy draws inspiration from nature itself- the space the animals inhabit, the forest floor of a wooded area. It further dives into the fragmented form of the composition despite the collective harmony, subverting Saint Saens' usual 'serious composer' reputation with a playful score. Composed in 1886, it falls shortly after the Romantic era ended, a time that focused on nature, literature and was anti-industrial, post the Renaissance era of technology.
Animals in this carnival are circus performers and trapeze artists moving to the live orchestra of pianos (2), violins (4), cellos (4) and a double bass (1) playing alongside a pre-recorded instrumental track over the sound system. This choreography takes place over 4 chapters, each with 2 performers weaving over and within the structure as the audience watch them from the floor looking up (like looking up in a forest).
The piece lasts 15 minutes and admits 20 audience members at a time.
